The construction industry is remarkably good at discovering a problem at the most expensive possible moment.
It’s rarely because teams are careless, or that they made one catastrophic mistake.
More often, projects begin drifting out of alignment quietly, months earlier. Specifications evolve. Schedules compress. Assumptions go unchallenged. Different teams begin operating from different expectations.
By the time material reaches the site, the project is no longer coordinating. Rather, it is negotiating under pressure.
Few scopes expose this reality more clearly than architectural glazing and custom fenestration systems operating deep inside the project’s critical path.
Managing Disruption
Nothing appears broken in isolation. Until the material arrives and the project discovers too late that alignment quietly disappeared somewhere upstream.
By then, the consequences are no longer limited to the glazing package itself. A missed assumption becomes a scheduling problem. A delayed clarification becomes a field problem. A discrepancy discovered too late becomes a relationship problem between teams already operating under pressure.
At that stage, nobody is solving a simple technical issue anymore. The project is managing disruption: compressed timelines, escalating costs.
The difficult reality is that corrective action becomes exponentially harder once fabrication, logistics, and installation are already in motion.

That reality became the foundation of a recent collaboration between Hansen Construction and Dynamic Fenestration.
For Hansen, the above risks are not theoretical.
As a luxury residential builder operating primarily in Aspen, Colorado, Hansen works inside one of the more demanding construction environments in North America: high altitude, extreme seasonal conditions, significant snow loads, rigorous thermal performance requirements, and projects where architectural ambition leaves very little room for downstream compromise.
Dynamic and Hansen have worked together inside those conditions for more than two decades. Over time, relationships like that stop operating transactionally. Instead, they are built on trust. These teams begin recognizing patterns earlier. They communicate better. Difficult conversations happen sooner—before small problems become expensive ones.
The Glass Audit
That collaborative history between Hansen and Dynamic shaped the discussion around a recent glass audit initiative for a luxury residential project in Aspen, Colorado, designed by Olson Kundig architects.
The way the collaboration happened was critical. This wasn’t Dynamic inspecting its own work in isolation. Jeff LaPierre, Dynamic’s in-house glass specialist, went to the glass facility not as a representative of Dynamic, but of Hansen.
Jeff spent three full days at the factory reviewing the project’s glazing prior to final fabrication and assembly. Every piece of glass and every sealed unit was individually inspected and approved before moving forward.
In total, 70 sealed units were reviewed—every piece in the order. Most of the units exceeded 60 square feet—dimensions that still qualify as exceptionally large architectural glass within the industry.
Why It Mattered
The results reinforced exactly why the process mattered. Sixteen individual glass lites were rejected. Three completed sealed units were rejected entirely and remanufactured before shipment.
Otherwise, those assemblies would have arrived on site. And by that stage, the consequences would no longer have been isolated to glass replacement. They would have affected schedules, sequencing, installation coordination, labor, and project momentum.
That distinction is critical—the value was not simply finding defects. It was finding them while correction was still controlled, localized, and inexpensive relative to downstream disruption.
The objective was not simply inspection, nor was it about searching for mistakes. Rather, the goal was to reduce uncertainty before uncertainty reached the job site.
Because, in complex residential construction, the most expensive problems are often not fabrication failures. They are coordination failures. Moments where assumptions, approvals, site realities, fabrication, and scheduling quietly drift apart without anyone fully recognizing it.
The purpose of the audit was to interrupt that drift early—before shipment, before installation, before the project entered the phase where every correction carried amplified cost and consequence.
Safeguarding Continuity
The process involved reviewing glazing assemblies, specifications, approvals, finish conditions, dimensional coordination, and broader project alignment prior to release and delivery. But simply describing the technical process misses the larger point.
In the end, what Hansen and Dynamic were really safeguarding was continuity—the continuity between the architect’s intent and the fabricated system, the continuity between approvals and production, the continuity between what the project team believed was arriving and what would ultimately reach the site.
Because once projects lose continuity, recovery becomes expensive—not only financially, but operationally, relationally, emotionally.
Experienced builders understand this instinctively. They know that a project can absorb difficulty, but what it struggles to absorb is surprise. Inside luxury residential work, where custom conditions, bespoke detailing, and compressed schedules leave very little tolerance for ambiguity, late unexpected changes become very weighty.
Collaborative Risk Alignment
Hansen viewed the audit process not as an additional layer of administration, but as a form of risk alignment.
According to Hansen’s leadership, the objective was never inspection for its own sake. The objective was certainty: to verify that what had been approved, discussed, coordinated, and expected was truly what would arrive on site.
For Jeff LaPierre of Dynamic, the role was not to defend a supplier, but to represent the project itself, to stand inside the manufacturing environment long enough to confirm alignment before the project inherited irreversible momentum.
That level of involvement reflects something deeper about the Hansen–Dynamic relationship. After more than two decades of collaboration, both teams understand that trust is not built through assumptions. Rather, it is built through visibility, transparency, and a shared willingness to confront difficult realities early, while solutions remain practical.
For these teams, the glass audit was a disciplined pause that created that essential alignment.
Protecting Architectural Intent
